Spruce Up Let Loose at Tandem House!
WOW, what a way to start the summer!!! Saturday 1 December saw the 666 ABC Spruce Up hit the grounds of Tandem House. It was still dark when the 666 morning crew and others began to arrive to get things started. As the sun rose the live broadcast hit the airwaves and the first volunteers arrived and got straight to work. Before long the place was a hive of activity with people busy weeding, digging, shifting mulch and soil, painting, paving, rolling out turf, installing soft-fall, constructing a pergola and garden beds, and preparing and serving food and drinks.
The day seemed to be a whirlwind of activity despite the soaring temperatures.
Meeting new people and making new friends was all part and parcel for the day along with laughing and having a great time. I think that together, we clearly proved the truth in the saying, “many hands make light work”.
What we hoped to create through the Spruce Up was a fun, productive and safe outdoor space that would be engaging and accessible to all who visit Tandem House.
Mission accomplished!!! The end result is simply amazing; the photos below give you an idea of just how much the area was transformed.
We are incredibly grateful to 666 ABC Canberra and The Saturday Morning team, in particular Andrea, Greg, Willow and Spence, for providing us with this wonderful opportunity and without whom we would never have achieved such a brilliant outcome. We are also truly grateful for the support we received from people throughout Canberra and the surrounding region. It was amazing to see the number of people who turned up to volunteer their time and energy or contributed in other ways such as donating money and resources. Also overwhelming, was the generosity of local businesses, with donations of items such as cash, soil, mulch, granite, turf, plants, building materials and refreshments. Finally, a huge thank you to our very own Steve Dascarolis, who contributed so much of his own time, energy and resources to help make the Spruce Up a reality.
To all a great big thank you.
